Arcade Attack Podcast – April (5 of 5) 2019

Podcast 114 – April (5 of 5) 2019 – Remakes & Remasters – The Good, The Bad and The WTF??

Whether it’s a glossy finish (remaster) or your favourite game built from the ground up (remake) it’s safe to say that this process has extended the lives of many a retro franchise. The Resident Evil 2 remake has put remakes and remasters back into the spotlight. We have a good chat about our favourites and not-so-favourites whilst trying to work out whether they’re a good thing or not. Cash cow or homage? Our opinions plus lots of your opinions from a tweet we released the other day makes for a very interesting/argumenty chat indeed.

  1. Around 40 mins, you talk about having an engine and a framework, then *snap* the remake happens. That’s a huge oversight. They created a tremendous amount of new content for the game, models, textures, environment details, effects, animations, characters, interactions etc. etc. It’s completely redone from the ground, it’s a huge effort to make it look this effortless. Sure, some pipelines were laid down with the new engine, but don’t underestimate how much work does a “simple” switch of camera viewpoint do. Not to mention timing, resource design, route design etc, all that stuff designed, tested and reiterated hundreds of times.

Yeah, just a quick rant, it was not a snap, it was a tremendous effort 🙂

    1. ha ha! fair point! yes, although the engine lays certain framework there was a lot of effort put into the game, and we appreciated it! valid rant! hope you enjoyed the pod. D

      1. Yeah sure did, just found it by a request of a designer friend, and I am slowly working backwards on the backlog. Fun chaps, good times, so its all good 😉
